Hiking the Wonderland Trail: Day 8
Просмотров 1894 месяца назад
August 16, 2023 - Day 8 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 13.5 miles (21.7 km) from Nickel Creek to Longmire, the place where we had parked our car and started our hike on Day 1. This day had relatively little elevation compared to our other days on trail, so we finished the hike quickly and easily. As we got closer to Longmire, we noticed more and more day hikers. We arrived at Longmire around...

August 15, 2023 - Day 7 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 6.8 miles (10.9 km) from Indian Bar to Nickel Creek. This was our shortest day by far, but we decided to get an early start so that we could watch the sunrise from a spot just up the mountain from Indian Bar. We woke up at 3:30am, left camp at 4:00am, and about 40 minutes later, we had found a beautiful place to eat breakfast and watch t...

August 14, 2023 - Day 6 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 14.2 miles (23.0 km) from Sunrise to Indian Bar. We got an early start due to it being such a long day, leaving at 5:00am and finishing around 3:30pm. This day had stunning views, especially around Summerland (another campsite on the Wonderland Trail). The area was filled with creeks, purple wildflowers, an alpine lake, and views of Mt. ...

August 13, 2023 - Day 5 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 8.6 miles (13.8 km) from Mystic Lake to Sunrise, leaving at 8:00am and arriving around 2:00pm. The day included our first mountain goat sighting, tons of panoramic views, and a visit to the Sunrise Snack Bar (worth the 1.5 mile trek from camp). I also summited Skyscraper Mountain, which ended up being one of my favourite moments from the...

August 12, 2023 - Day 4 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 13.1 miles (21.1 km) from Mowich Lake to Mystic Lake. We woke up before sunrise and left camp at 5:50am, though we only arrived at our final campsite around 5:00pm. This was our longest day on trail. We saw our second and final bear of the trip and took the Spray Park Trail alternate route, which we highly recommend to other hikers.

August 11, 2023 - Day 3 of the Wonderland Trail. We hiked 10.3 miles (16.6 km) from Golden Lakes to Mowich Lake, leaving camp at 8:40am and arriving at 2:00pm. The day included a scenic lunch spot on a rocky riverbed, a quick dip in the lake, and a dinner of “charcuterie” at our beautiful (albeit very busy) campsite. Mowich was also where we picked up our food cache ft. Pringles, strawberry pop...

August 10, 2023 - Day 2 of our Wonderland Trail adventure. We hiked 11.5 miles (18.5 km) from South Pullaup River to Golden Lakes, starting at 8:00am and ending around 2:45pm. The day featured misty landscapes, our first black bear sighting, and another cozy campsite with a ramen & tuna dinner.

On August 9, 2023, Emily and I set off on our Wonderland Trail adventure. We set out to Mt. Rainer with nothing but a hope that we would somehow secure a walk-up permit to one of America's most beautiful trails. With some luck and planning, we managed to do just that and began our 8-day journey on a trip we will never forget. On Day 1, we walked 12.8 miles (20.6 km) from Longmire to South Puyal...

    Most Leica reviewers are far more focused on their own personality and the status of owning a collection of fifties museum pieces than actually taking pictures. I have two digital Leicas, an M9 and an M10-R. I also have a set of Sony Alphas. They represent a different approach to taking pictures. Sony makes things fast and easy. With the Leicas, you have to stop and think. With cats and little children, this can be problematic. With adults and landscapes, less so. The quality of images makes the effort worthwhile when you nail it. Count on three months of learning curve at least. Leitz lenses are hugely overpriced. You buy them as investments or fetishes. the price of the lens cannot be seen in the final result. Beware of the Leica cultists!

    My choice from film to digital happened when the costs of film, optical prints, flash drives, premium scans and shipping costs were over $100 a roll. My film camera is a Nikon F2 and was curious about the Leica MD 262 after Thorsten Overgaard`s video. As it happened, I did manage to purchase a mint condition MD 262 over at KEH camera! The images from the SD card, RAW, to computer were mesmerizing. Film still has a spot but it`s much smaller now...!

    Nice set up! I did the PCT in '21, and my kit definitely changed throughout the hike. -I ended up dumping my sun umbrella in a hiker box because it would trap the heat on the really hot days, but plenty of people swear by them. -You don't need a full roll of luko tape. Just wrap some around a pen/sharpie/itself or even your trekking pole. If you ever run out, there is a very high chance you'll find more luko tape in hiker boxes on your journey. And do the same thing with a little bit of duct tape as well, for those unexpected gear failures. -Have you tried using injinji liners with the darn toughs? Perfect for helping prevent those blisters! -I used the Durston last year on the CT and its the best tent (just double check the lines that hold the floor in place, mine came untied so I had to make some tougher knots). -There were a few sections we needed more than 4L of water so just keep an eye on the water report 😊. (Sorry for all the unsolicited advice 😅) Good luck, yall are gonna rock it!!!

      @ThomasSkrlj 2 месяца назад

      Thanks so much for all the tips! I haven't tried the injinjis but my partner is using them and seems to like them a lot. You're totally right about the tapes, both of them. Putting them on the trekking pole will be super helpful.

    Very curious about the cooking situation. If you’re camping at a spot with no water source, how are you washing out your pot afterwards? I’m just thinking I’d want to avoid using the filtered water for that.

    • @ThomasSkrlj
      @ThomasSkrlj 2 месяца назад

      Great point. In areas where water is less accessible, we are going to try and prioritize meals that don't need to be cooked or dehydrated meals that only require boiled water just to avoid the cleanup. Otherwise, we will just have to plan ahead. With a max water carry of 6L for myself, hopefully, that is enough to get everything nice and clean.

    I think you'll eventually find that shooting with a cellphone as an EDC will begin to feel wrong. Yes, it's logical. Yes, it's convenient. Yes, the image quality is quite good. But, at the end of the day, it doesn't *feel* like photography. The physical process, holding a phone out at arms length and composing with a screen.. immediate feedback all the time.. no relevant choice with focus decisions, etc. All it offers is a photo. Fine and well, but in absence of the experience a photo can lose part of it's soul, imo. Probably just me being too in those feelings lol

    • @ThomasSkrlj
      @ThomasSkrlj 2 месяца назад

      You're totally right. Two years later I of course use my phone like everyone else but I am exploring smaller options to have a more dedicated camera. I have the Hasselblad when I really want to think but am liking the GR for an everyday or causal use camera. Plus a lot cheaper so I wouldn't baby it. Havent pulled the trigger on anything yet though!

    I think that staying at White River campground is close enough to the river for some similarly epic sunrise views. I’m not saying staying at sunrise isn’t great for that (hence the name) but white river campground by the river gives a similar vibe I believe. Beautiful shots of Summerland. Maybe the best I’ve ever seen to be honest. Excellent job capturing the beauty of the area in all its forms. And Indian Bar is a really beautiful area.

    Fantastic shot of carbon glacier snout at 19:30. That’s the lowest elevation glacier in the US I believe. And you’re right that it’s incredibly long. The soil and rock that cover it, if the layer is thick enough, serves to insulate the glacier from the sun. If it’s too thin, it ends up absorbing more than insulating and heats up the glacier quicker. And the shots of Tahoma from Moraine Park right before you get to Mystic are really beautiful.

    Emerald ridge truly is breathtaking; excellent photography and cinematography. Great shots of Tahoma Glacier. I was quite impressed by you actually filming on the bridge as the standard thing I’ve seen on many Wonderland videos is that the phone goes away when you’re on the bridge. So your comments about the sketchiness of the bridge are definitely what others have felt as well. And it reminds me of something one of my engineering professors told the class many years ago, that even if a structure is structurally sound and has plenty of strength for the load it’s carrying, if it’s sagging or moving that in most cases is considered a design failure. While it may have been different for our ancestors, for most of us 21st century folks, we want rigid structures with very limited (if any movement). Swaying and bobbing isn’t really our thing. Thanks again for the beautiful video and for your enthusiasm and wonder!

    Interesting limbo discussion you're having in the video. The comparison with the iPhone (which was my digital camera for the past many years) which in a way both makes perfect sense and no sense at all. If you don't care about photography but just want to make snapshots with family, then the iPhone assures "good" pictures in almost all situations. But they are stereotype with the same much to well known focal length that everyone shoots with and a big depth of field. Predictable and boring - everyone wants to show and share, but no one cares to take an interest in. You can do more with an iPhone - also fun sophisticated things, but the absence of intuitive buttons make it less user friendly. A Leica M, however is an almost fully manual camera. Slow to use, forces you to be attentive to what you are doing but with proper well prepared settings for your planned shots also extremely fast and a no hassle camera for documenting and reporting and a rewarding camera for stunning portraits, architectural og landscape photography, when you bother to work with all of your knowlege and experience to create artwork. As for the latter, lenses di matter, and you have the opportunity to express yourself in all but clinical correctness thanks to the array of vintage lenses since 1920. A friend of mine gave me a Leica R5 SLR for which I bought a Summicron 50 and Elmarit 90 lens as a reentry into photography. It gave me back the love for it and inspired me to go digital with a Leica M10, and I just love the experience. The camera doesn't take the pictures - I do. Whether I sink or swim, it's my doing. I also have Leica V-Lux with all the bells and whistles of advanced programmable buttons which served as my stepping stone from R to M, and I rarely use it. I will never get to understand it properly, and I enjoy the uncompromising simplicity of the M. It's like coming home. How I remembered analog photography from way back. But it is not nostalgia to me. It is uncompromising presence when I take the pictures. I sense, you are maturing some of the same thoughts. I hope you will find yourself photography wise and reunify with a manual rangefinder in any shape and form

    • @ThomasSkrlj
      @ThomasSkrlj 5 месяцев назад

      You bring up some fantastic points and I am glad you found your match with your daily camera for documenting life. Having been a couple years since the filming of this video there are parts I still stand with and parts I waver from. I do desire something more, something more deliberate but for me it would fall in the realm of a GR or a X100. For me, they are just a better fit in terms of form factor. That and for the money I would rather put the money into my work camera kit rather than just a daily carry. I do admit I miss using the rangefinder though, there is nothing quite like it.
